Europa League: Liverpool stunned as Atalanta take charge of quarter-final tie

Much-changed Reds humbled by Italian visitors

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left stunned as his much-changed side were humbled 3-0 at home in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Atalanta on Thursday.

Scamacca double gives Atalanta advantage

Gian Piero Gasperini's visitors took the lead through Ruslan Malinovskyi's early strike and doubled their advantage when Cristian Romero headed home from a corner.

Roberto Piccoli then added a third for Atalanta late on to leave Liverpool with a mountain to climb in the second leg next week.

Klopp admits Liverpool were 'not good enough'

"We were not good enough," Klopp told BT Sport after the match. "We didn't play well enough, we didn't fight enough, we didn't win enough challenges.

"It's not easy to explain why, but it's my job to do so. We have to do better, much better. We have to show a different face next week."

Liverpool face uphill task in second leg

Liverpool will need to produce a remarkable comeback when they travel to Bergamo for the second leg on April 15. However, Atalanta will be confident of finishing the job after their impressive display at Anfield.

The Italian side have now won their last four matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last seven.
