REAL ID Act Enforcement: Passport or Enhanced ID Required for Domestic Cruises

Effective May 3, 2023

Attention, cruisers! Beginning May 3, 2023, the REAL ID Act will go into effect, mandating enhanced security measures for domestic air and sea travel. This means that all guests sailing on WEB Cruises from one U.S. port to another will be required to present a passport valid for at least six months from the date of your cruise. A passport is the only form of identification that meets the REAL ID Act standards.

What is the REAL ID Act?

The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to enhance the security of federal facilities and to prevent terrorism. It establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards, known as "REAL ID" compliant licenses.

Do I need a passport to cruise?

Yes, if you are a U.S. citizen, you will need a passport valid for at least six months from the date of your cruise to sail with WEB Cruises on a domestic itinerary. This is true for all guests, regardless of age. Children under the age of 16 may present a birth certificate and a government-issued ID with a photo, such as a school ID.

What other forms of identification are accepted?

Non-U.S. citizens may present a valid passport or a government-issued national ID card. Canadian citizens can also present a valid Canadian passport or Enhanced Driver's License (EDL). Enhanced Driver's Licenses are REAL ID compliant and meet the same security standards as passports.

Where can I get a passport?

Passports can be obtained through the U.S. Department of State. Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, a passport photo, and a fee. The passport application process can take several weeks, so it is important to apply well in advance of your cruise.

What if I don't have a passport?

If you do not have a passport and cannot obtain one in time for your cruise, you will not be permitted to board the ship. WEB Cruises recommends that all guests apply for a passport as soon as possible.
