Synopsis

The Substance follows Sarah (Margaret Qualley), a young photographer who travels to a remote island with her wealthy boyfriend, Jeff (Dennis Quaid), and his daughter, Violet (Demi Moore). While exploring the island, they unwittingly stumble upon a mysterious substance that begins to alter their bodies in grotesque and terrifying ways.

As the substance takes hold, the characters' bodies begin to transform in unimaginable ways. Their flesh melts, their bones break, and their sanity disintegrates. They are forced to confront their own mortality and the fragility of the human body.

With The Substance, director Coralie Fargeat returns to the body horror genre with a vengeance. The film is a visceral and unflinching exploration of the horrors that can befall the human body, both physical and psychological.

The Substance is an official selection of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and is sure to be one of the most talked-about films of the year.
