Career

Jose Marques is full professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is also Associate PI at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, and senior researcher at the Centre for Research in Education and Intervention in Lisbon. He has published over 100 articles in international journals and his work has been cited over 4000 times. His research interests include educational assessment, teacher education, and research methods.

Career

Marques received his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Lisbon in 1994. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1996 to 1997. He returned to the University of Lisbon in 1997 as an assistant professor and was promoted to full professor in 2008. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Ghent, Belgium, and the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Research

Marques' research focuses on three main areas:
  • Educational assessment: Marques has developed several new methods for assessing student learning, including the use of computer-based simulations and portfolio assessments. He has also studied the effects of different assessment methods on student learning.
  • Teacher education: Marques has developed and evaluated several new teacher education programs, including programs for training teachers to use technology in the classroom and programs for training teachers to work with students with disabilities.
  • Research methods: Marques has developed several new research methods for studying educational problems, including the use of qualitative research methods and mixed methods research. He has also published several articles on the use of research methods in educational research.

Awards and honors

Marques has received several awards for his research, including the Medal of Scientific Merit from the Portuguese government in 2009 and the Outstanding Research Award from the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction in 2010. He is also a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon and the American Educational Research Association.

Personal life

Marques is married and has two children. He enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and reading.
