Gretchen Whitmer: Michigan's Second Female Governor
Early Life and Education
Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born on August 23, 1971, in Lansing, Michigan. At the age of 10, her parents divorced, and she lived with her mother and siblings in Grand Rapids. Whitmer graduated magna cum laude from Michigan State University's College of Law.
Political Career
Whitmer entered politics in 2000 when she was elected to the Michigan State House of Representatives. She served in the House until 2006, when she was elected to the State Senate. In 2016, she was elected Ingham County Prosecutor.
Governor of Michigan
In 2018, Whitmer was elected the 49th Governor of Michigan, becoming the state's second female governor after Jennifer Granholm. As governor, Whitmer has focused on economic development, education, and healthcare reforms.
