A Tiny Treasure from the Amazon
The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a captivating and diminutive fish that has captivated the hearts of aquarium enthusiasts worldwide. Originating from the Amazon River basin in South America, these charming creatures are one of the smallest tropical fish in the trade, making them a wonderful choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists alike.
Habitat and Appearance
The Pygmy Corydoras is found in the slow-moving waters of the Rio Madeira basin. They prefer densely planted areas with plenty of hiding places, such as driftwood and rocks. These tiny fish typically reach a maximum length of just 1 inch, making them ideal for nano tanks or small aquariums.
They have a distinctive appearance, with a rounded body, a slightly elongated snout, and two pairs of barbels that they use to search for food. Their coloration varies from pale yellow to dark brown, with irregular dark spots and stripes. Their dorsal fin is often tipped with a touch of red or orange.
Behavior and Compatibility
Pygmy Corydoras are peaceful and easy-going fish that make excellent tankmates for other small, peaceful species. They are known for their playful and inquisitive nature, and they spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the tank in search of food.
They are social fish and prefer to live in groups of at least 6 individuals. They are generally compatible with other bottom-dwelling species, such as dwarf shrimp and snails, but should be kept away from larger, aggressive fish that may see them as food.
Diet and Care
Pygmy Corydoras are omnivores and will readily accept a wide variety of foods. They should be offered a balanced diet that includes live or frozen food, such as brine shrimp and bloodworms, as well as algae wafers and sinking pellets.
These fish are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a small aquarium of 10 gallons or more. They prefer water temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C) and a pH range of 6.5-7.5. Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential for maintaining good water quality.
