Temporary road closures to address road safety concerns
Summerland, B.C. - The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) has announced temporary road closures on Garnet Valley Road, in response to ongoing safety concerns in the area.
The closures will allow the LSIB to complete road maintenance and safety improvements, including widening the road and improving sightlines. It will also provide safer access to residences and businesses in the area.
Road Closure Details
The following sections of Garnet Valley Road will closed to through traffic, starting on Monday, March 6, 2023:
- Between Highway 97 and Boyle Road, and from the BC Hydro right-of-way to Garnet Lake Road. - A detour will be in place via Highway 97, Coalmont Road, and Highway 5A. - The road closures are expected to be in place for approximately two weeks, weather permitting.Safety Concerns
The LSIB has identified several safety concerns on Garnet Valley Road, including:
- Narrow road width, making it difficult for vehicles to pass safely. - Poor sightlines, particularly at corners and intersections. - Inadequate pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. - High traffic volumes, especially during peak periods. - The road closures will allow the LSIB to address these safety concerns and make the road safer for all users.Detour Information
Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route via Highway 97, Coalmont Road, and Highway 5A. The detour will add approximately 20 minutes to travel times.
Emergency Access
Emergency vehicles will have access to the closed sections of Garnet Valley Road at all times.
Public Transportation
The BC Transit Route 71 will continue to operate on Garnet Valley Road, with some minor schedule adjustments.
